BIO162 Lab

I apologize, but I have not finished the lab for tomorrow… personally I blame the painkillers this weekend :)

I’ll bring copies for everyone to the lab.

Classes this week

Okay, the docs want me to take another day for recovery, just to make sure.  I am feeling good, sore, but alive.  Here is what we will do about class.

BIO162:  No weekly quiz this week, we will just subtract the points from the total.  Start where we left off on Tuesday, I’ll get the lab up later and the lab quiz will be postponed one week.

CEM131:  No weekly quiz this week, we will just subtract the points from the total, likewise with lab 3.  Start where we left off on Tuesday.

BIO220:  We will start where we left off on Monday, here is the Case Study to start looking at (PDF).  You need to start thinking about the answers, we will be working on parts 1-3 as groups and you will be turning in Part 4 in a few classes.  The lab report will be postponed on week.

Here are a couple of images from the crash for the morbidly curious.

No class on wednesday

Yeah, so I am sitting in the hospital after getting in a rollover accident on the way home tonight. My car is totaled but I am all in one piece. I’ll see you guys on Monday. As for Thursday, I’ll post tomorrow.

Chapter 7 in CEM131

I am running my syllabus a little different this term.  I feel that it is best to continue with the basic structure of the atom before we move on in chemistry, so we are going to go to Chapter 7 next.  Don’t worry, this is actually a fairly normal way to do things, and a lot of text are switching to this order.  In fact, if you look at our text you will notice that Chpaters 7 and 8 are pretty divorced from the chapters surrounding them.  The PowerPoint for Chapter 7 is up now.

BIO162 Lab 3

I am taking it easy on you guys today, lab three is a cake walk.  It is mainly an observational lab to just relate the structure and function of the cells to each other.  We will have our first lab quiz next week and it will cover labs 1-3.

BIO220 Grades posted

The grades for Exam 1 were posted for BIO220, but you won’t be able to figure it out till tomorrow when you get the first exam back.

Also note, the lab report for the afternoon class is not due this week.

CEM131 and BIO162 Grades

The exams are graded for BIO162 and CEM131 and new grades posted on the course sites.

In CEM131 the class average was 72% and the high score was a 92%, therefore the curve was 2% (see the syllabus for an explanation of the curve).

In BIO162 the class average was 75% and the high score was a 96%, therefore there was no curve to this exam (see the syllabus for an explanation of the curve).  Please note that some of you who may have been used to getting a boost in your grade from the curve might be disappointed this term.  Remember, it is only the successful students in BIO161 that move on to BIO162, so the averages will most likely be higher and the curves nonexistent or lower than in BIO161.

Grades for BIO162 and CEM131

The first grades, post Weekly Quiz 1, are posted for BIO162 and CEM131.  Of course they mean nothing until I hand back this first assessment and you get your student number.  The student number will be circled at the top of the quiz.  If you did not take the first assessment, you were assigned a number based on the remaining numbers in the class.

BIO162 Lab UPDATED

Lab 2 for BIO162 has been updated.  The original post was missing the section on lab report requirements.  Here is the text missing.

Lab Report Requirements

The following materials should be submitted at the start of the next lab period.

1.  Completed Lab Data Sheet

2.  Copies of all Lab Notebook Pages (including any calculations)

3.  Graph for linear regression either done by computer (with linear equation on graph) or done by hand with hand-done calculations of linear formula included.

3.  Answers to questions in each section, organized by section. (must be typed)

Please staple these together prior to class.

Lab 2 for BIO162

The second lab for BIO162 is up for your use.
